April, my second favorite month

We are so enjoying this beautiful spring.  The 90 degree temperatures some days ago produced a plethora of blossoms.  Our gardens and property filled with the incredibly sweet fragrance of lilacs as our bushes, almost overnight, produced thousands of blossoms.  Ed and I cut two more large bouquets from the now fading lilacs so I can have one on on the dining table and one on my desk at work to enjoy this week.  I'm sad to see them go, but determined to enjoy them every fleeting moment they belong to us.

"Lilacs, False Blue, White, Purple,
Colour of lilac,
Your great puffs of flowers
Are everywhere in this my New England ...
Lilacs in dooryards
Holding quiet conversation with an early moon;
Lilacs watching a deserted house; ...
Lilacs, wind-beaten, staggering under a lopsided shock of bloom,
You are everywhere."

The orchard burst forth in a single hot afternoon, peppering our newly green views with lovely tufts of white.  The grass turned emerald green and required mowing within a week, filling the air with the sweet fragrance we've missed so dearly all winter.  The crocus, then the daffodils all burst out almost at once, and the sweet woodruff turned dark green and produced those tiny little white flowers that make the perfect slippers for the stately tulips that also pushed their flowers toward the sunlight.  I love this time of year.  It's just astonishing.

I think the snows this past season made the spring especially sweet.

The cooler days and strong winds have all but spent the flowers we've been enjoying all week, but today I noticed the wisteria vines pushing new leaves out of its twisted frame.  I'm always amazed at the gorgeous display of sweet blossoms that soon will grace our pergola, so I have that to look forward to.

Soon we will sow our spinach and lettuce seeds so we can enjoy the freshest of organic salads.  Then we will sow the rest of the vegetable gardens with corn, squash, tomatoes, green beans, and any other vegetables we might enjoy .  Sunflowers and cosmos and zinnias will all be placed with care into the warm soil to produce the lovely blooms for our late summer photo shoots.  We'll plan to spend more than a few warm weekend evenings lying on a blanket in our yard, drinking chilled Riesling and admiring the stars in the vast view of the sky we are fortunate to have and competing over which of us will be the first to spot the satellites.

The kids and grandchildren will be coming by more frequently to enjoy the pool and we'll have an opportunity to spend a lot more time with them.

We intend to enjoy every minute of the coming summer and hope you do as well.
